this blog is about 2 stories both written by Francisco Arcellana.
"Divide by Two" is all about love affair and possession. when i read the story, i was really amazed about how the story was written. it used a lot of symbolisms. at first i thought it was just about two neighbors who are fighting over a fence but as the story flows i begin to realize that it was not just about a simple fence anymore. with the help of the dialogs of the character, the real conflict of the story was revealed.
"The Mats" is somehow similar to the first story. when i was reading the story, i kept asking my self, "what's the big deal about the mats?!" but after my report, i realized a lot of points why the mats were so important to them. the theme of the story for me is "accepting death in a family". how would you move on when a love one dies?i think the story emphasized the difference of moving on and forgetting. honestly, i have never felt this kind of situation, ever but by observing other people like my friends, acceptance is the hardest part of death. anyone could move on but i believe that no one could ever forget. just like the father in the story, he has accepted the fact that his 3 children are gone but he never forgot them . he still bought mats for them because he still believes that even if they are gone they are still a part of his family.
